WWE Pay-Per-View Season 22 Episode 8 Vengeance 2006
- June 25, 2006
On June 25, 2006, the WWE presented Vengeance, its annual pay-per-view event at Charlotte Bobcats Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina. The show featured seven matches, including one women's bout and six men's matches, with WrestleMania 22 main events John Cena, Edge, and Triple H each competing in crucial match-up.
The opening match was a six-man tag team match between Spirit Squad and Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Haas, and Super Crazy. Spirit Squad was a five-member, male cheerleader team representing OVW. Despite being outnumbered, Benjamin, Haas, and Crazy emerged as victorious.
The next match was the first of two women's matches, where Mickie James battled Trish Stratus for the WWE Women's Championship. James was the challenger and was looking to capitalize on Stratus's recent vulnerabilities. In the end, James captured the title, defeating Stratus with a kick to the head.
The following match was between Johnny Nitro and Carlito for the Intercontinental Championship. Nitro had won the title from Shelton Benjamin three weeks ago. Nitro retained his title by pinning Carlito after a corkscrew neckbreaker.
The fourth match featured D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) versus The Spirit Squad (Kenny, Mikey, Nicky, and Johnny). The Spirit Squad revealed that they had a fifth member, Mitch, earlier in the evening, but he was removed from action when he was attacked backstage by DX. Even with four members remaining, The Spirit Squad lost the match, and DX celebrated their win in the center of the ring.
The fifth match was between Rob Van Dam and Edge, who was accompanied by Lita. Edge has been undisputed WWE Champion since WrestleMania 22 in a triple threat match against John Cena and Rob Van Dam. The winner of the match would challenge Edge for the WWE Championship at future pay-per-view, The Great American Bash. Edge emerged as victorious following interference from Lita.
The sixth match of the evening was a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match between Johnny Nitro and Jeff Hardy for the vacant WWE Championship. Hardy won the title by grabbing the championship belt hanging from the rafters.
The main event was a triple threat match between WWE Champion Edge, John Cena, and Triple H. Cena was still seeking revenge on Edge ever since losing the WWE Championship to him at New Year's Revolution in January. Triple H was pressured into the match by Mr. McMahon. The match had back-and-forth action, but Edge emerged victorious after pinning Triple H following a spear.
Overall, Vengeance 2006 was a memorable event featuring several significant matches, including the first Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match for the WWE Championship and the triple-threat main event with two WWE Championship matches.
