WWE Pay-Per-View Season 3 Episode 1 Wrestlemania III
- March 29, 1987
On March 29, 1987, the biggest event in professional wrestling history took place as over 93,000 fans packed the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan for Wrestlemania III. The WWE Pay-Per-View event was headlined by a historic match between WWE Champion Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant.
The undercard featured some of the biggest names in wrestling at the time, including Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, and Jake Roberts. The opening match was a six-man tag team match featuring The Can-Am Connection and "Cowboy" Bob Orton taking on The Magnificent Muraco, "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff, and "The King" Harley Race.
Next up was a mixed tag team match pitting Hillbilly Jim and the Haiti Kid against King Kong Bundy and Little Tokyo. The match was a fun showcase featuring the larger-than-life Bundy squaring off against the pint-sized Little Tokyo.
In what many consider to be the greatest match in Wrestlemania history, Randy Savage defended his Intercontinental Championship against Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. The two put on a technical masterpiece filled with high-flying moves and near falls, culminating in Steamboat winning the title.
Other notable matches included Jake "The Snake" Roberts taking on The Honky Tonk Man, The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff defending their Tag Team Championships against The Killer Bees, and The British Bulldogs defeating the team of The Dream Team to win the Tag Team Championships.
But the night belonged to Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant, who had been building towards their Wrestlemania showdown for months. Hogan had been the face of WWE for years, but Andre was undefeated and had never been beaten cleanly in a match. The two clashed in a battle that saw Hogan lift and slam the 500-pound Andre, sending shockwaves through the Silverdome and the wrestling world.
Wrestlemania III proved to be a pivotal moment in the history of professional wrestling, cementing WWE as the premier wrestling company in the world and inspiring a new generation of fans and wrestlers.
