Dhane is a peasant farmer. He and his family live a life of severity in the precarious hills of Nepal. Still, they are relatively content until personal tragedy strikes. Then they must borrow money at an exorbitant rate. When they cannot pay back the moneylender, Dhane and his wife and sister are forced to leave their ancestral home. This Nepalese dramatic film is based on the 1957 novel of the same name, which is the most widely-read novel ever written in Nepal. Basain is a story not just of sorrow and poverty, but also of generosity and strength.
