Solaris, a science fiction film, is adapted from a novel written by Stanislaw Lem. The focus of the film is human and alien communication. The action is through the eyes of the scientists who are researching extraterrestrials. Before his Solaris mission, the audience is presented with the back story of Kris Kelvin, the psychologist, as played by Donatas Banionis. The long-time Solaris space station mission has not made advances in a while. Further, the majority of the crew appears to be experiencing various types of emotional upheaval.

Kelvin travels to Solaris, finding the detached and confused surviving scientists. Kelvin notices the oceans of the planet, tossing about. When he awakes from a troubled nap, he sees his late wife, Hari. She doesn't realize she is dead by her own hand. Concerned she's an alien construct of Solaris, he tricks her into being sent into space. Dr. Snaut tells him that other strange visitors have been seen on the planet. They now all believe that Solaris is sentient.

The scientists all meet together to figure out what is going on. They have begun to believe that the planet Solaris is sentient and is attempting to communicate via the apparitions. Next, the scientists broadcast Kelvin's brainwaves, trying to communicate. Later, while Kelvin is asleep, Hari tells the scientists to kill her.

Then, Kelvin has nightmares of his deceased mother and additional Haris haunting him in his room. Snaut informs Kelvin that apparitions have stopped appearing. The researcher lets Kelvin know that Solaris has begun generating extra land masses. Kelvin is torn between returning or staying on Solaris, to connect with departed loved ones.

Finally, he returns to earth, where his dog greets him. Kelvin is delighted. Suddenly, he understands it's raining in the house. His dad doesn't seem to notice. As they hug, the movie camera portrays them actually being on an island on Solaris.

Solaris is a 1976 drama with a runtime of 2 hours and 45 minutes. It has received outstanding reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 8.0 and a MetaScore of 93.
