This historical drama traces the difficult path of one Jewish family as they fight against the political and cultural currents in Hungary. The film follows multiple generations of the family, first as they cope with daily life in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The struggle becomes much more desperate when Hungary falls under Nazi rule during World War II, and things are still not easy when the country is taken over by Communist rule after the war. The film was directed by Istvan Szabo and stars Ralph Fiennes, Rosemary Harris, and Rachel Weisz. The film opened in 1999 and was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards.
