Colonel Redl is a 1985 Hungarian drama. It was directed by the Hungarian director Istvan Szabo and stars Klaus Maria Branduer, Jan Niklas and Gudrun Landgrebe. The film won the 1985 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. The screenplay is based on a John Osborne play titled A Patriot for Me. The story centers on the ethnic tensions in pre-World War I Austro-Hungary. These tensions eventually spilled over into the assassination in Sarajevo that resulted in World War I. Redl is a boy who wins an appointment to a prestigious military academy. Redl continues climbing in his military career as he becomes more and more involved in the political tensions of the time.
