The Invisible Woman is a British biographical drama that centers around the love affair of author Charles Dickens and his mistress in the 19th century London. At the height of his writing career, Dickens meets a younger woman who becomes his secret lover until his death. Nelly, who is an avid fan of Dickens’ literary works, enters into the secret affair with her idol. She spends her youth in love with the author. As she is much younger than her secret lover, it is inevitable that Nelly will out-live Dickens.

The movie plays out as a flashback as it moves between the world of Dickens before and after his death. Nelly walks along a beach, dressed in black as she mourns the loss of her lover.
