Vegas in Space is a 1991 sci-fi comedy movie directed by Phillip R. Ford. The movie was produced by a San Franciscan cabaret troupe called "The Cockettes". The film is a spoof of various space adventure movies, especially of the popular Star Trek franchise. It features three drag queens who save the galaxy from an evil space queen, with lots of humor, glitter, and feather boas.

The movie is set in the year 3001, where the universe is ruled by an evil space queen named Regina (played by Miss X). She wants to turn the whole universe into a giant casino, using her "Cosmo Slot Machine," which is powered by a mystical object called "Orb of Energy." The only thing that can stop Regina's evil plan is the "Orb of Ultimate Galactic Power," which is in the possession of the Intergalactic Environmental Enforcement Squad (IEES).

IEES is all-women, and its members are known as the "Galactic Glamour Girls." They dress in shimmering silver outfits, carry ray guns, and fly a spaceship called "S.S. Intercourse." The team is led by Captain Danica (played by Doris Fish), who has a cunning plan to recover the Orb of Ultimate Galactic Power from Regina. However, the mission goes awry, and the team ends up stranded on a distant planet with no way back to Earth.

Captain Danica and her crew are forced to dress in disguises and try to blend in with the natives of the planet. They choose to transform themselves into drag queens, embarking on an adventure filled with humor and glamor. The team comprises of Captain Danica, Vanity (played by Ginger Quest), and the "Supreme Hair Goddess" Billee (played by Miss X). They team up with a local scientist named Professor Kinsey (played by Ray Vasquez) to retrieve the Orb of Energy, which they believe is in Regina's possession.

Throughout their adventure, the Galactic Glamour Girls face various obstacles, including killer robots, android assassins, and Regina's henchmen, the "Cosmo-ettes." The Cosmo-ettes are a group of loyal dancers, who help Regina enforce her tyranny across the galaxy. However, the Glamour Girls are not afraid of a little sparkle and put on a show-stopping performance, both to deceive their enemies and to keep their spirits up.

The movie is a hilarious spoof of the sci-fi genre, combined with a drag queen cabaret show. The Cockettes bring an over-the-top, campy energy to the movie, with lots of glitter, sequins, and feather boas. The musical numbers are catchy and fun, with lyrics that poke fun at sci-fi cliches. The special effects are intentionally cheesy, taking inspiration from classic B-movies.

The drag performances in the movie are a highlight. The characters transform from feisty sci-fi heroines to glamorous drag queens, complete with big hair, bold makeup, and extravagant outfits. The Cockettes' influence is apparent in both the storytelling and the visual aesthetics of the movie, with emphasis on subversive gender identity and queer culture.

In summary, Vegas in Space is a wild ride through the galaxy that will make you laugh, sparkle, and believe in the power of drag. The movie is a unique combination of sci-fi spoof and drag queen cabaret, with a campy, over-the-top energy that is both entertaining and inspiring. The Cockettes have created a cult classic that celebrates queer art and diversity, while also parodying mainstream sci-fi tropes.

Vegas in Space is a 1991 science fiction movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 25 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.5.
