16 Stones tells the story of a spiritual and physical journey three brothers take as they look for proof of the stories included in the Book of Mormon. Set in 1838, in a period when the people who follow the Mormon faith were persecuted within Missouri under the orders of the state's Governor, 16 Stones tells a story about understanding different faiths and looking for evidence for individual beliefs.

James is living a quiet life in the small Mormon settlement of Haun's Mill in 1838 when the Missouri Governor produces an order calling for followers of the Church of the Latter Day Saints to be treated as enemies of the state. A group of local men arrive at the settlement and physically attack the people and their property, leading to James searching for proof in his own faith.

Accompanied by his two brothers, James sets out on an adventure to find the mythical 16 Jeredite Stones touched by the hand of God. The journey takes the brothers on a journey across Missouri as tensions rise between themselves and the local people who mistrust the brothers before they get to know them.
