A classic mystery thriller featuring the most famous detective of all time. Despite taking its title from the original Arthur Conan Doyle novella the plot of the film is entirely original. Sherlock Holmes (Reginald Owen) is approached by Annabelle Murphy (Doris Lloyd) the widow of a recently deceased man named James Murphy. Mrs. Murphy is horrified that her husband's will makes no provision for her at all, instead granting his entire fortune to some group she had never previously heard of. Suspecting wrongdoing by her late husband's lawyer Thaddeus Merrydew (Alan Dinehart) she has come to Holmes in hopes of exposing the fraud and claiming her rightful inheritance. Holmes suspects there is more to the case and that Murphy's apparent suicide was in fact murder. As he and his faithful companion Dr. Watson (Warburton Gamble) dig into the convoluted goings on of the clandestine group Murphy belonged to more of its members begin to turn up dead and the investigation becomes a race against time. Also featuring Ana May Wong as Annabelle Pyke, June Clyde as Eileen Forrester, and Alan Mowbray as Inspector Lestrade. Directed by Edwin L. Marin with a screenplay by Robert Florey.
