The movie Alien: Covenant from 2017 is a sci-fi thriller directed by Ridley Scott, and it is set ten years after the events of Prometheus. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, and Billy Crudup. It revolves around a group of colonists who are on a mission to a distant planet in search of a new home. However, they soon discover that the planet is not what it seems, and they are forced to fight for their survival against an alien threat.

The movie begins with the colonization ship Covenant on its way to a new planet to start a new life. The crew is made up of couples, scientists and soldiers, all with the hope to make a fresh start. The crew is woken up from cryosleep by an unexpected disaster, after which they decode a signal from a nearby planet that seems to be a perfect match for their needs. Captain Oram (Billy Crudup) decides to change their course and steer to the planet to investigate it. He had reservations about going there but because he was pressured by the crew and synthetic Walter (Michael Fassbender), he made the decision anyway.

Upon arrival, a team, along with Walter descends to the planet's surface to explore the terrain and identify potential hazards. However, as soon as they land, they realize that this planet is hostile, and their mission is not going to go as planned. They soon come into contact with the mysterious David, the synthetic from Prometheus (also played by Michael Fassbender), who has been stranded on the planet for years. David seems to have an obsession with creating alien life, and he has been experimenting with the black goo from the previous movie, which can create new and deadly creatures. The crew quickly discovers that the planet is infested with terrifying creatures that threaten to wipe them out.

The film takes us on a journey full of suspense and horror as the crew tries their best to survive, and they're being strained as they navigate a planet full of unknown threats. The team's survival is threatened through various gores, chases and body counts. While some of the crew members have been killed off, we did get a chance to get to know and appreciate some of them. Katherine Watson plays Daniels, the heartbroken partner of the former captain killed in the same accident that woke the crew. She soon takes charge as the horrors unfold, the ship's final survivor, she becomes this film's Ripley-esque "Final Girl", and she is entirely capable and strong, portraying her character with an understated performance.

The film's climax is intense and highly satisfying, with some plot twists thrown in for good measure. David, in particular, provides some captivating moments, and Michael Fassbender, who plays both Walter and David, deserves credit for adding depth to the character. The iconic Alien monster that gave the series its name does not feature as much as some fans may have wanted, but it does appear in the movie's third act. But overall, the movie is more focused on the story surrounding the creatures rather than the creatures themselves.

Alien: Covenant is a visually stunning movie with beautiful cinematography that captures the terror in this dark universe created by Ridley Scott. The special effects are top-notch, and combined with the amazing sound design, they create a truly immersive experience for the viewers. The film manages to balance suspense, sci-fi elements, and horror, making it a must-watch for fans of the franchise.

In conclusion, Alien: Covenant is an intense and action-packed sci-fi horror movie that manages to capture the essence of Ridley Scott's original Alien movies while creating a fresh and engaging story that stands on its own. The film's strong cast, stunning visuals, and excellent sound design are its biggest strengths, and they manage to keep the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the film. If you are a fan of the franchise or just love sci-fi thrillers, this is a movie you should not miss.

Alien: Covenant is a 2017 horror movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 2 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.4 and a MetaScore of 65.
