Alienated, a science-fiction movie, centers on the lives of four friends who get lost in the wilderness while hiking. During their expedition, they become disconnected from reality and begin questioning their existence as they come across an inexplicable, menacing presence in the woods. The film begins with the introduction of these four friends – David, Zach, Emily, and Brendan – who are excited to embark on a hiking adventure together, with the intention of exploring new uncharted territories. As they navigate through the woods, tensions rise between them due to the mundane nature of the trip, and they end up getting lost.

As they wander aimlessly through the wilderness, they stumble upon a strange cave system. However, as they explore the caves, they discover that the location is not on any map and is not accessible by any known path. As their situation starts to become more chaotic, they realize they are not alone. Something malevolent is lurking in the caves with them, watching their every move.

As the night sets in, strange things start happening – they begin to experience hallucinations, illusions, and flashbacks. They become increasingly terrified, and their mental states deteriorate, revealing their hidden fears and anxieties. The strange presence in the cave starts to mess with their senses, and they start to question their own reality.

As the group's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, they begin to turn on each other. The once-close friendships begin to fray under the strain of the unknown force in the cave. They now determined to find a way out of the cave, they come face-to-face with the very real possibility that they might not ever leave the cave alive.

The cinematography in this movie is remarkable as the director strives to create a sense of uncertainty and discomfort. Due to the isolated and confined nature of the caves, every sound the characters make echoes in the background, adding to the claustrophobic atmosphere. The camera work is steady and careful, allowing the audience to see the characters' fear and confusion as they try to navigate through the strange surroundings.

The ensemble cast does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. Mike Hennessy, who plays David, is thoughtful and sympathetic, while Cody Hunt, who plays Zach, is more impulsive and reckless. Sammie Lideen, who plays Emily, does an excellent job of portraying the character's underlying emotions and bottled-up anxieties. Danny Torgersen, who plays Brendan, does an excellent job of playing the character that is the most unhinged as the chaos around him starts to take its toll.

Alienated is not a conventional science fiction film. Instead of flashy special effects, it relies on its atmosphere and characters to draw the audience into the story. The plot is not for everyone as it is a slow burner and can be somewhat polarizing in nature. However, the film's nuanced approach to character development and its portrayal of the effects of fear and paranoia make it an intense and unique watch that will stay with viewers long after the credits roll.

In conclusion, Alienated is an intriguing, psychological film that manages to succeed in the genre of science fiction without the use of jarring special effects or CGI. The movie takes the audience on a journey through the forest, where the characters battle to stay sane and maintain their friendship. Through the tense and highly dramatic scenes, audiences are kept on the edge of their seats and are left guessing until the very end. It is a must-watch for anyone searching for a thought-provoking, gripping and emotionally-charged thriller.
