Sonic the Hedgehog
- 1 hr 39 min
In the comedy adventure Sonic the Hedgehog, a very speedy blue hedgehog teams up with a human to fight against a supervillain. The film is based on a video game franchise that has also spawned several animated series. As the movie opens, Sonic, an alien hedgehog who can run very fast, uses a magical portal to travel to Earth. He's on the run from a tribe of evil echidnas who want to usurp his power. Sonic settles in Montana. He makes friends there with the local sheriff. When a series of accidents makes Sonic look like a villain, the scientist Dr. Robotnik tries to track him down and capture him. Sonic and the sheriff end up in San Francisco, where the city provides lots of opportunities for chases and adventures. The film is based on characters from the long-running Sega video game franchise. Development of the film began back in the 1990s, but it never went into production in the 20th century. In the meantime, the franchise spawned numerous games and animated TV series. The movie project moved from studio to studio until Paramount Pictures finally began production in 2018. The first trailer for the movie, released in 2019, received an extremely negative reaction from fans who hated the animation design of the main character. The film went back into production for three months for a complete redesign of the character. The film became one of the highest grossing films of 2020 thanks to the pandemic-impacted movie season that year.
