Interstate 60 is a somewhat supernatural story revolving around a central character named Neal and a strange pipe-smoking gentleman known as O. W. Grant. Neal is a young man with a dilemma. His father wants him to pursue a career in law, but Neal really wants to be an artist. The story centers on the strange powers O. W. seems to possess which can make people's dreams come true. Neal sets out on an adventure along a mysterious highway referred to as interstate 60. Along this route he encounters a number of bizarre people who are also looking to have their wishes fulfilled. Among some of the people Neal encounters is a mother in search of her teenage son. Neal offers the mother a ride to a nearby town. The town is unlike anything he has seen before. The town offers a legalized narcotic which is extremely addicting. In exchange for providing the inhabitants with the drug, the town makes all drug users work for the town. By doing menial jobs such as sweeping, the addicted people can continue to receive their free drugs. The young teen has run away to this town in hopes of having more fun. This particular story has an unexpected ending which leaves Neal questioning whether he makes the best choices. All of the people Neal encounters as he follows the interstate have their own story lines which appear to be designed to help Neal make a better choice about his own wish. Throughout the story is a recurring dream Neal has about a beautiful young woman. While driving down the road he sees a billboard with the beautiful woman on it. He decides it is a sign he must follow to find this woman rather than make his scheduled stop, which was to drop off a package, O. W. had given him. The results of that single decision create an outcome Neal does not want.
