Beautiful People, a 1999 British comedy-drama film directed and written by Jasmin Dizdar, is a story about the Bosnian War between 1992-1995, which takes place in London but explores the lives of different people from different cultures and countries. The movie showcases various lives that are deeply affected by the war, and how they come together on various occasions.

The movie begins in London in the year 1993, during a time when the city is ecstatic about being awarded the 2012 Olympic Games. However, life is not easy for everyone in the city, as people come from different parts of the world and try to make a living. As the city is preparing for the Olympic Games, a bomb explodes in a London street, killing several people. This act eventually brings the lives of all the characters together.

There are several storylines in Beautiful People, making it a multi-layered movie. The main storylines involve two Bosnian families, the Divjak family and the Glavonic family. They are both Muslim Bosnians and have to flee their homes and country because of the war. The Divjak family consists of Mero (Emir Hadzihafizbegovic) and his wife Huda (Senada Alimanovic), their baby son Damir (Thomas Goodridge), and their teenage son Luka (Dado Jehan). They seek refuge in England as refugees, while Huda has to deal with the loss of her sister in Bosnia. The Glavonic family consists of three members, single mother Senada (Jelena Mila), her son Mirsad (Faruk Pruti), and her mother Ankica (Eileen Walsh). They come to England as illegal immigrants and settle in a flat with several other immigrants.

Apart from these two main families, the movie also features the stories of several other characters. The two most notable characters are the Serbian football fan (Tony Peters) and a British soldier, Major Gibson (Charles Kay). The Serbian football fan is homophobic, occasionally racist, and often rude, and has a criminal record. The British soldier, on the other hand, is suffering from post-traumatic stress after serving in Bosnia during the war. The movie also features a group of British people that live in the same building as the Glavonic family, who are afraid of Muslims and feel threatened by their presence.

The movie depicts the various struggles and challenges that these characters face in their daily lives, as well as the prejudices they face based on their nationality, ethnicity, and religion. However, amidst this chaos, there are several heartwarming and funny moments, which are a reminder of the resilience and kindness amongst people.

The movie's central theme is the notion that humanity should unite in times of crisis, without being affected by social or political boundaries. The characters' personal stories, although fictional, resonate with that of real-life refugees and immigrants who have faced similar issues in the past and present. However, despite the dark subject matter of war, discrimination, and bigotry, there is a sense of hope in the movie's ending.

Beautiful People is a well-made movie with a great cast and compelling storytelling. The movie is cinematically beautiful, showcasing the city of London from a unique perspective. It is a relevant representation of the struggles of war refugees and immigrants, as well as the difficulties of adjusting to foreign cultures. However, more than that, it is a movie about the human ability to hold onto hope and goodness amidst hardships.

Beautiful People is a 1999 war movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 47 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.7 and a MetaScore of 79.
