Blondie Brings Up Baby is a 1939 American comedy film directed by Frank R. Strayer and starring Penny Singleton, Arthur Lake, and Larry Simms. The film is the third installment in the Blondie film series and is loosely based on the long-running comic strip of the same name by Chic Young. The film follows the Bumstead family, consisting of husband Dagwood (Lake), wife Blondie (Singleton), and their young son Alexander (Simms). When Dagwood's boss, Mr. Radcliffe (Jonathan Hale), invites the Bumsteads to spend the weekend at his country estate, they jump at the opportunity. However, things quickly become complicated when they discover that Mr. Radcliffe's young niece, Cookie (Marjorie Ann Mutchie), has been left in his care and he expects the Bumsteads to look after her.

Blondie, who is always eager to help others, takes on the responsibility of caring for Cookie while also trying to keep up with her usual domestic duties. Meanwhile, Dagwood has his own problems to deal with as he tries to impress Mr. Radcliffe and win a promotion at work.

As expected, chaos ensues and the Bumsteads find themselves in a series of hilarious misadventures. Along the way, they encounter a number of colorful characters, including a bumbling but well-meaning maid (Dorothy Moore) and an eccentric inventor (Donald Meek).

One of the film's strengths is the chemistry between Singleton and Lake, who play off each other beautifully. Singleton's portrayal of Blondie is particularly noteworthy, as she manages to be both warm and tough when needed. Simms, who was just eight years old at the time of filming, also turns in a strong performance as Alexander.

The film's comedic set pieces are well-crafted and consistently funny. Highlights include a scene in which the Bumsteads try to sneak Cookie out of the house without waking her up, and another in which Dagwood inadvertently destroys Radcliffe's prized gardens.

Despite being nearly 80 years old, the film holds up surprisingly well. While some of the references and jokes may be lost on modern audiences, the film's overall charm and wit make it an enjoyable watch for both fans of the original comic strip and newcomers to the series.

Blondie Brings Up Baby is a delightful comedy that will have viewers laughing from start to finish. With its likable characters and clever humor, it remains a classic example of the golden age of Hollywood comedies.

Blondie Brings Up Baby is a 1939 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 12 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.7.
