The movie begins with Dana living in California with her dad. Her family moved to Los Angeles when Dana was five years old, and her mom died from cancer. Dana is a teen who dreams of studying marine life and surfing. On the other hand, her dad wants her to go to college in California. Dana has been reading her mother’s journal about the life she had in South Africa and is mesmerized by her mother’s surfing in a home video.

Dana decides while her dad is away on a business trip she would go to South Africa to the places where her mother had gone and to Jeffrey’s Bay to live her mother’s dream. Her mother’s dream was to catch the big waves at Jeffrey’s Bay, and Dana is determined to complete her mother’s dream. Once Dana is in South Africa she meets some new friends and begins her journey to where the mother’s journal takes her.

When Joel returns from his business trip to find his daughter has left to go to South Africa, he decides to go to South Africa to look for her. He goes to Jeffrey’s Bay and watches his daughter surf the waves. He tells his daughter how proud he is of her and that her mother would be proud of her too.
