Brazil, the world's fifth largest in size with the sixth largest population, is considerably larger than all of Europe combined. If ever a country showed contradictions, it must be said it is truest of Brazil, from the elegant magnificence of Rio de Janeiro to the dark, forested backwaters of the Amazon. On the southern border with Argentina is Iguassu Falls. It is the world's fourth largest waterfall by volume and perhaps the most spectacular. Brazil's coastline staggers the imagination; 4,600 miles of varying, rugged coast, harbors, islands and amazing white sand beaches. But if ever an area defied superlatives, it is the Amazon River Basin, draining an area larger that the contiguous United States.
