Based on a true story, California Dreamin' covers an event that took place in 1999 during the Kosovo War. Marines tasked with carrying radar equipment to Kosovo were held up in a Romanian village called Căpâlniţa by Doiaru, a station master who hated Americans because America was partially to blame for the loss of his parents to Russia. He uses a paperwork technicality to stop them. Captain Doug Jones falls in love with Doiaru's daughter while they wait. Eventually, they were allowed to leave, but the radio wasn't installed until two hours after a ceasefire with Yugoslavia was officially declared.
