Chicago Confidential, a classic crime drama from 1957 takes us through the thrilling and dangerous underworld of organized crime in Chicago. Directed by Sidney Salkow and written by Aben Kandel, the film features an excellent cast led by Brian Keith, Beverly Garland, and Dick Foran, among others. As the story begins, we see three friends, a politician, a police detective, and a lawyer, presenting themselves as crusaders against the rampant corruption in their city. However, their pristine images shatter when the detective is accused of being on the take for ten years. The scandal leaves him jobless and penniless. To add insult to injury, one of the most infamous crime lords in the city, Lucky Luciano seeks his help to clear himself of a murder charge.

Desperately needing money to pay his bills, the detective agrees to help Luciano but only if he reveals everything he knows about the criminal activities of the other underworld bosses. Luciano agrees, and the detective sets out to bring down the other mobs in the city. As he goes deeper into the investigation, he realizes that the syndicates have their tentacles in the highest echelons of power, and there is a lot of collusion between the cops, the politicians, and the criminals.

The detective's investigation turns an entire network of corruption and crime inside out, and he becomes the target of the other bosses, who try to silence him any way they can. Meanwhile, Lucky's mistress, played by Beverly Garland, has her own reasons for wanting the detective eliminated. The situation becomes even murkier when the politician, the lawyer, and Luciano, who initially sought his help, become suspicious of his intentions.

Chicago Confidential is a gripping noir thriller, skillfully directed and impressively acted by the cast. Brian Keith delivers a great performance as the cop who cuts across the system's red tape to bring the mob bossesto justice. Beverly Garland is riveting as Luciano's mistress, who is a devious and ruthless woman. Dick Foran plays the role of the crooked lawyer perfectly.
