Dachra: Curse of the Witch is a Tunisian horror movie that takes you on a chilling journey through the countryside. The movie, which is directed by Abdelhamid Bouchnak, follows three journalism students who set out on a documentary project about a woman who was locked up in a psychiatric hospital for over 20 years. Yasmine, a bright and ambitious journalist, and her two friends, Walid and Bilel, are assigned to produce a documentary about a woman named Mongia, who was deemed insane and confined to a mental institution for over 20 years. Yasmine is determined to uncover the truth about this case and is undeterred by the warning she receives from her supervisor.
The trio sets out on a journey to the small village where the hospital is located. The journey is long and tiring, and towards the end, they are forced to take a different route to avoid a roadblock. This decision ultimately leads them to a remote village in the middle of nowhere, where they ask for directions to reach the hospital. The villagers are unfriendly, and as they progress deeper into the maze, they start to realize that this place is not what it seems.
Things take a turn for the worse when they encounter a woman who runs into their car. After the incident, the woman disappears, and the trio goes looking for her. They end up outside a house, where they are invited in for dinner. The house is isolated, and the villagers are all dressed in traditional garb, raising suspicion among the visitors.
The dinner table is laden with exotic food, and the students discover that the villagers have a taste for human flesh. As the night goes on, the students realize that they are in grave danger and that they should leave the village as soon as possible. However, they soon discover that leaving the village is not as easy as they thought.
One of the best things about Dachra is its ability to take the audience on a journey with the characters. The movie manages to build tension and suspense that lingers throughout the film. The sudden twists and turns in the plot keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
The other aspect of the movie that stands out is its atmosphere. The eerie and foreboding village filled with strange rituals and cannibalistic tendencies create a sense of dread and unease. Bouchnak does an excellent job of creating an unsettling ambiance with an effective use of sound design, lighting, and score.
The performances of the lead actors are commendable. Yasmine Dimassi, who plays the role of Yasmine, the journalist, is a standout performer. She is compelling and convincing as the determined journalist who will stop at nothing to get to the truth. Hela Ayed, who plays the role of Mongia, the cursed witch, delivers a haunting performance that sends shivers down the viewer's spine.
Overall, Dachra: Curse of the Witch is a fantastic movie that delivers on its promises. It is a well-crafted horror film that will leave you terrified. It's a refreshing and unique addition to the genre, and one that horror fans will enjoy. Bouchnak's direction, combined with its excellent performances, atmospheric setting, and effective storytelling, make it a must-watch for horror enthusiasts.
