This documentary produced for PBS by WGBH Boston, was written and directed by Ric Burns. It focuses attention primarily on one grim aspect of the Civil War that divided the United States in the mid-19th century- the shockingly high number of casualties during the fighting. It notes many practices of modern conflicts, such as armies notifying survivors about the deaths in combat of soldiers, did not occur then. Reportedly, tens of thousands of soldiers remained missing in action at the end of the four year war. The film explores how the high death toll changed society in the United States.
