Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie is a 2003 British television movie that tells the story of Dr. Martin Bamford (played by Martin Clunes), a successful and respected surgeon who is forced to give up his career and relocate to the tiny village of Port Isaac in Cornwall as a general practitioner after developing a severe aversion to blood.

Upon his arrival, Martin finds it difficult to adapt to the idiosyncrasies of his new home and the eccentricities of its inhabitants. The locals, on the other hand, initially view him with suspicion and hostility, regarding him as an outsider and an intruder. However, over time, Martin slowly earns their trust and respect, and he starts to form close relationships with some of them, including the beautiful and headstrong primary school teacher, Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz).

As he settles into his new role and comes to terms with his fear of blood, Martin starts to hear about a local legend concerning the "Cloutie." According to the legend, the Cloutie is a mischievous spirit that lurks in the woods surrounding Port Isaac and is said to have the power to heal the sick and grant wishes. The villagers believe that by leaving offerings, such as pieces of cloth tied to the trees or coins thrown into the nearby pool, they can appease the Cloutie and receive its blessings in return.

One day, Louisa's class takes a field trip to the woods to learn more about the Cloutie legend, and Martin joins them. While in the woods, they stumble upon a young boy, Tommy (Joe Sowerbutts), who has fallen and injured himself. Martin examines him and determines that he needs to be taken to hospital. However, when they return to the village, they discover that Tommy's parents, John and Eleanor (Anthony Calf and Anna Chancellor), have forbidden their son from receiving medical treatment, as they believe that the Cloutie will help him.

Martin is stunned by their refusal, and despite his initial skepticism about the legend, he becomes increasingly intrigued by it. He decides to investigate further and soon finds himself on a mission to uncover the truth behind the Cloutie and its powers.

As he delves deeper into the legend, Martin discovers that some of the villagers have been keeping secrets, and all is not what it seems. With Louisa's help, he sets out to uncover the truth and, in doing so, discovers a side to himself that he never knew existed.

Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie is a heartwarming and engaging movie that delves into themes of belief, tradition, and community. Through its exploration of the Cloutie legend, the movie provides a fascinating insight into the customs and beliefs of rural Cornwall, while also delivering an engaging mystery that will keep viewers guessing until the very end.

Martin Clunes delivers an excellent performance as Dr. Martin Bamford, portraying the character's journey from an uptight and dismissive outsider to a compassionate and open-minded member of the community with nuance and skill. Caroline Catz is equally impressive as Louisa Glasson, bringing a vibrant energy to the role that perfectly complements Clunes' more reserved performance.

Overall, Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie is a delightful and heartwarming movie that will appeal to anyone who loves a good mystery, as well as those interested in exploring the customs and traditions of rural life in Cornwall. With its engaging storyline, charismatic performances, and stunning scenery, it is a movie that is not to be missed.
