This dark comedy, set in New York City, follows the life of Holocaust survivor Herman Broder, who marries his Polish maid, Yadwiga, after coming to America post-war. Although his wife thinks he is a travelling salesman, in reality Herman is a ghost writer cheating on her with another Holocaust survivor. He constantly fears she will discover his secrets. His life becomes even more complicated when his first wife Tamara, who he thought was killed in the war, arrives in New York with the couple's children.
