Evil in the Woods is a horror film from 1986 directed by Curtis Hanson. The movie follows a group of six college students who venture into the wilderness for a weekend camping trip in order to forget about the stresses of schoolwork and daily life. However, their peaceful getaway turns into a nightmare when they unknowingly enter the territory of a group of bloodthirsty cannibals.

The students quickly discover strange markings on the trees as they hike deeper into the woods. They eventually stumble upon an abandoned cabin and investigate it, only to find that it's filled with bizarre artifacts and ominous symbols. As the group settles into their campsite, they start to notice that something is not quite right. They hear strange noises and experience unexplainable events, but they shrug them off as paranoia induced by their surroundings.

As night falls, the terror intensifies. The students are attacked by the cannibalistic group and must fight for their survival. They barricade themselves inside the cabin and try to keep the attackers at bay, but one by one, they are picked off. The struggle for survival becomes a gruesome battle as the students come face to face with the horrors of the wilderness.

Despite the plot's lack of originality and the stereotypical characters, the film is an entertaining watch for fans of the horror genre. The movie's saving grace is the eerie backdrop of the forest which creates an atmosphere of dread and unsettling unease. Hanson effectively captures the isolation of the camping trip, lending it a desert landscape feel despite being set in a dense forest.

Furthermore, the gore effects are commendable for their time, and the practical effects are quite convincing. The cannibals themselves are effectively creepy and scary, with the movie never giving away too much about them. This leads to some wild, suspenseful, and pulse-pounding moments as the characters try to evade their attackers.

While some of the performances are wooden and unconvincing, Schelli Marie Barbaro stands out for her outstanding portrayal of a terrified and vulnerable young woman. Brian Abent does a decent job as the leader of the group, and Carolina Antonini's character serves mainly as the requisite love interest for the protagonist.

Overall, Evil in the Woods is a worthwhile watch for fans of 80s horror movies. While it isn't without its flaws, it delivers the gore, suspense, and gruesome imagery that fans of the genre have come to expect. If you're looking for a nostalgic, low-budget horror film to watch on a rainy day, Evil in the Woods might just be the perfect pick.
