Fated to Repeat, a 2018 independent film, directed by Roberto Monticello, is a character-driven drama where three women are entangled in a soulful, emotional journey about holding onto the past and the fear of the future through love, strength and courage. The film follows three women, each facing a unique challenge regarding their past and present relationships. Sarah (Virginia Newcomb) is stuck in a rut after her divorce. She is reluctantly trying to get back into the dating game, but the fear of rejection and the memory of her failed marriage remains on top of her mind, haunting her every step. Meanwhile, her mother (Charlotte Rea), who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, has her own struggle of accepting her mortality and the looming possibility of leaving her daughter alone.

In contrast to Sarah's struggle, we also have Tara (Megan Few), a young aspiring artist looking for love in all the wrong places. She finds herself involved with Jake (Will Stewart), a soldier deployed overseas. Their relationship is tested when Jake comes back from a hidden mission with PTSD, struggling to readjust to civilian life. The two try to hold on to their love, but their future together becomes uncertain when Jake's deployment is extended unexpectedly.

As the three women's lives become intertwined, they each find themselves reevaluating their current paths and forced to confront their fears about past relationships and what's next. Sarah must overcome her fear of rejection and start a new life for herself, while Tara must decide if she’s willing to stand by Jake, who is not the man she fell in love with. Meanwhile, Sarah's mom must come to terms with the reality of her health, both physically and emotionally, and help her daughter prepare for the future.

Fated to Repeat does an excellent job of portraying realistic relationships that aren't necessarily perfect, but are complex and layered with genuine emotion. The film speaks of timely topics like PTSD, mental health, and terminal illness in a respectful, thoughtful manner.

Each character has an arc that contributes to the overall story, making this multi-layered film both intriguing and thought-provoking. The performances from the lead actors are excellent; each character’s portrayal feels authentic with subtlety and delicate nuances.

The cinematography is another aspect that shines in the film. The camera work and editing are exceptional, with the use of natural light and settings that capture the mood of each scene beautifully.

Overall, Fated to Repeat is a touching, meditative film on life, love and loss. It's a heartwarming and emotional journey, presenting complex characters in relatable contexts to tell a story that is deeply human. By the time the credits roll, the film will leave the viewers emotional and reflective, making them appreciate the present moment and the people around them.
