Elgin's too busy studying and working on physical fitness in college to have a love life until he sees Caroline Hedges during a meal in the cafeteria. In a later scene, Elgin works as a busboy in the cafeteria, hoping he'll see Caroline a little more often. Finally, he gets to speak to Caroline, and he blows it by accidentally spilling hot tea on her paperback book. Caroline gives him her name and dorm. Elgin replaces the book he ruined. After Caroline breaks up with a guy named John, Elgin enrolls in one of Caroline's classes to be near her.
