Set in the 1950s, Foreign Student follows the story of Philippe, a young Frenchman who travels to America to attend college. Despite speaking little English, he is determined to succeed and make a life for himself in his new home. Upon arriving in the United States, Philippe is assigned to live with a wealthy Southern family. He quickly becomes enamored with the family's daughter, April, and the two begin a tumultuous romance that defies both cultural and racial barriers. As Philippe navigates American college life and tries to find his place in a foreign country, he is faced with a number of challenges. From prejudice and discrimination to culture shock and homesickness, he struggles to adapt to his new surroundings. Adding to the complications is the fact that Philippe is a brilliant artist, and he quickly becomes disillusioned with the rigid academic system of his new school. His frustration with the limited creative opportunities available to him threatens to undermine his entire experience in America. Despite the obstacles he faces, Philippe perseveres, determined to make the most of his opportunity to study abroad. Along the way, he forms friendships with other foreign students, including a Japanese man named Hiroshi and an Indian woman named Mili. Together, they navigate the ups and downs of college life in America, and support each other through their struggles. Throughout the film, Robin Givens gives a standout performance as April, imbuing the character with equal parts vulnerability and strength. Marco Hofschneider also shines as Philippe, capturing the character's longing and determination with authenticity and nuance. Ultimately, Foreign Student is a powerful story about the challenges of cross-cultural communication and the importance of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. Through Philippe's journey, audiences are invited to reflect on their own experiences with change and growth, and to celebrate the power of the human spirit to overcome even the most daunting obstacles.
