In the 1974 action-adventure thriller, Gold, directed by Peter Hunt, Roger Moore stars as Rod Slater, an ambitious and determined geologist working for a big mining company called Consolidated Gold Fields in South Africa. Susannah York plays Terry Steyner, a wealthy widow and former lover of Slater who is now married to the company's Managing Director, Manfred Steyner, played by Ray Milland.

The story is set in the early 1970s when South Africa was still under apartheid, and tensions were high due to political and social unrest. Slater is tasked with heading a new deep-level mining project, but he soon discovers that there may be some irregularities in the company's operations, including the safety of the miners and the funding of the project. He becomes even more suspicious when his best friend and fellow geologist, Paul Nkulu, played by John Gielgud, dies in an accident while inspecting one of the company's mines.

Slater sets out to investigate the matter further and eventually uncovers a conspiracy involving corrupt officials, money laundering, and illegal smuggling of gold. He also turns to Terry for help in his investigation, and the two reignite their romance, causing tension with her husband who is on the verge of bankruptcy.

As Slater delves deeper into the conspiracy, he becomes the target of the corrupt officials, who will stop at nothing to protect their interests. Slater must use his intellect and wit to survive and bring the culprits to justice while also protecting the miners and the project from further harm.

Gold is a thrilling and suspenseful movie that showcases South Africa's beautiful landscapes and highlights the country's social and political issues. The performances of the lead actors, especially Roger Moore and Ray Milland, are excellent, and the chemistry between Moore and York adds depth to the story. The movie also features a great score by composer Elmer Bernstein and some well-executed action sequences.

Overall, Gold is an entertaining and engaging movie that is definitely worth watching, especially for fans of action-adventure thrillers and Roger Moore. It's a classic '70s movie that has aged well and is still relevant today, given the ongoing issues with mining operations and corruption in many parts of the world.

Gold is a 1974 action movie with a runtime of 2 hours. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 5.7.
