Hawmps! is a classic western-adventure movie from 1976, directed by Joe Camp and starring James Hampton, Christopher Connelly, and Slim Pickens. The movie is set during the late 19th century, in the American Frontier, and revolves around the story of a group of camels that were brought to Texas to be used as transportation for soldiers, but ended up being quite a bit more trouble than anticipated.

At the center of the story is Captain Henry 'Stoney' Stony Stonewall (James Hampton), a military officer in charge of a group of camels that were shipped to Texas from the Middle East. Stoney and his team of soldiers were tasked with training the camels to be used as a more efficient form of transportation in the rugged terrain of the American West.

The job of training the ornery, and often unpredictable, camels is made all the more difficult by the fact that none of the soldiers have any experience with camels, and also because of the deep-seated prejudice against anything foreign or unusual. Despite these challenges, Stoney and his team persevere, slowly but surely acclimating the camels to their new surroundings and training them to carry equipment and troops.

As the soldiers and camels grow more comfortable with each other, Stoney also strikes up a friendship with Tuck Kirby (Christopher Connelly), a local rancher who initially opposed the use of camels in the Texas terrain. Together, Stoney and Tuck work to overcome the challenges and obstacles that arise as a result of using these new and unusual animals.

Also, thrown into the mix is a group of local misfits, including a pair of con-men who are eager to take advantage of the soldiers' naiveté and a group of outlaws who plot to rob the soldiers. These plotlines add an extra level of excitement and intrigue to the story, as the soldiers must fight to protect themselves, their camels, and their newfound friends.

One of the standout performances in the movie is that of Slim Pickens, who plays Sergeant Clyde 'Stubby' Stubblefield, a seasoned soldier who initially dislikes the camels but slowly grows to appreciate them. Pickens brings a lot of humor and warmth to the role, and his scenes with the camels are particularly memorable.

Overall, Hawmps! is a delightful and charming movie that offers a unique take on the classic western genre. While it may not be the most action-packed film, it makes up for it with its heartwarming story, memorable characters, and beautiful scenery. Even those who aren't typically fans of westerns or animal-centric movies are sure to find something to enjoy in this lighthearted and fun film.
