Directed by Darnell Martin, the first African American director to lead a production by a Major Studio. This dramatic comedy is a mix of bitter sweet family matters. Lauren Vélez as Lisette Linares and Jon Seda as Chino Linares star in this heart warming story of how they face the trials and hardships; that come with living in poverty. Also starring , Lisa Vidal as Magdalena Soto, Griffin Dunne as Stephen Price, Jesse Borrego as Alexis and Rita Moreno as Rosaria Linares who brings in the authenticity. Lisette Linares is married to Chino Linares, who have three children together. Lisette is a stay at home mom that never got the chance to live out her dreams as a print model. Chino is a bike messenger, very macho and the bread winner. One summer when it's very hot, there is a major blackout and Chino is out to exploit the opportunity for free merchandise. This lands him in jail with a hefty bail, Lisette has no money and very few options. Forced to work, provide for her family and try and raise the bail for Chino she decides to follow her dreams. Lisette leans on her transvestite brother Alexis for moral support. Alexis is having his own battle with his parents because of his sexuality. Lisette is making her way when, she comes home from work to see her husband standing with Magdalena, the neighborhood tramp. This enrages Lisette and she throws him out of the family home. Chino's mother Rosaria Linares is pleased by the break up because, Lisette is part Dominican and Magdalena has pure Puerto Rican heritage. With luck on her side, Lisette lands a job with a major record label producer. He is trying to sign a Latin singing group. The group connects with LIsette and she gets the big break she was looking for.
