Something New is a movie about a successful African American tax attorney, Kenya McQueen. Kenya has sacrificed her personal life for her career and finds herself lonely and pressured by her mother to find a man and get married. She feels that because she is such a perfectionist, she must be in control over all things in her life. This has led her to be suspicious and judgmental of all black men and their intentions toward relationships. Unbeknownst to her, a friend of Kenya’s sets her up on a blind date with a white man, Brian, who is a landscape architect. Uncomfortable with dating another race, Kenya is rude to him, explaining that he was not what she expected and does not desire to continue with the date. She hastily excuses herself and goes home. The following week at a party, they meet again. Brian is the landscaper at the event. Kenya is impressed with Brian’s work and decides to hire him to design the backyard of her new home. As the work begins and progresses, the relationship between the Kenya and Brian begins to develop into a friendship. Kenya, still having reservations about being with a white man, finally gives him a chance, and they begin to date. Kenya’s parents and brother are divided over the notion of their daughter dating a man of another race. They feel that a landscaper is not good enough for Kenya and arrange for her to meet a black man, Mark, who they feel is “more suitable” for her. She breaks up with Brian when he completes landscaping her yard. After a few dates with Mark, Kenya realizes that Brian is the man she loves and wants to be with in spite of his race. As Kenya decides to follow her heart and get back together with Brian, he proposes marriage. In the end, the two reconcile and marry amongst friends and family. The 2006 film stars Sanaa Lathan, Simon Baker, Blair Underwood, Donald Faison, Alfre Woodard, and Earl Billings.
