The movie Brown Sugar was written by Micheal Elliot and Rick Famuyiwa, directed by Famuyiwa. Centers around two friends who met when they were children. Over the years they have developed the closest of bonds, only to realize that their love for each other goes much deeper than friendship. The character Sydney, played by Sanaa Lathan is an uptight up and coming editor who shares the love of hip hop with her childhood friend Dre. Dre whose character is played by Taye Diggs, is a successful A&R for Millennium Records. He has recently met a beautiful young woman that he is about to marry. The wedding is around the corner when Sydney realizes her feelings for her friend. An impromptu kiss the night before the wedding, floods Dre's mind with doubts about his relationship with his fiance Reese, played by Nicole Arial Parker. The wedding takes place and Sydney tries to brush off what happens, but with great difficulty. Her cousin Francine whose character is played by Dana Owens, "AKA Queen Latifah" is insistent that she stops the wedding. Shortly after Dre and Reese are married, they began to have problems in their relationship. Reese begins to notice the tight bond that Dre and Sydney have and becomes resentful. Sydney finds out that Resse is entertaining the advances of other men and tries to warn Dre. He accuses her of being jealous and blows it off. After a mix up with their cell phones, Dre intercepts a message that is meant for Reese. As a result Dre catches Reese in a restaurant having dinner with another man and files for divorce. Sydney and Dre really give their romance a try, but seals the deal after he calls into the radio station and professes his love for hip hop and Sydney. This is a urban love story filled with comedy.
