Il giorno della civetta (also known as The Day of the Owl) is an Italian crime thriller. The plot of the film centers around a mafia murder in a small Sicilian town, and dramatizes the power that the criminal syndicate has on the community. Directed by Damiano Damiani, the film was adapted from Leonardo Sciascia's work of the same name, a novel published in the early 1960s--an era during which the existence of the Sicilian Mafia was not only debated but denied. The story's release helped create greater public awareness of the Cosa Nostra.
