In Cold Blood is an American movie based on Truman Capote’s best selling story of the real-life murders of a Holcomb, Kansas, farmer, his wife and two of their children. Filmed in black-and-white, the movie depicts how the murders took place during the night of November 15, 1959, when two ex-cons named Richard Hickock and Perry Smith entered the home of well-do-do Herbert Clutter with the intention of forcing him to open his safe and stealing his money. They believed their plan was a foolproof way to get a large amount of cash to relocate to Mexico. The two men had been told about the safe by a fellow criminal who had worked for Clutter. Clutter did not have a safe or a large amount of cash. At this point, Smith lost his patience and slit Clutter’s throat. The two would-be thieves carried out the rest of their plan to kill the witnesses and murdered the Clutter family. After cutting his throat, the farmer was shot in the head with a shotgun. This was followed by the rest of the family being shot with a shotgun. The following month, the two killers were caught in Nevada. Smith claimed he killed Clutter and his son, and Hickock killed Clutter’s wife and daughter. The two men then tried to plead insanity. This ploy didn’t work; both were convicted of murder and executed by hanging on April 14, 1965 in Lansing, Kansas, at the Kansas State Penitentiary. The role of Perry Smith was played by Robert Blake. Scott Wilson played Richard Hickock. Alvin Dewey was played by John Forsythe. Dewey was the Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigator who caught the killers. Richard Brooks’ direction received an Academy Award nod as well as nominations for Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography.
