Watch Islam: Empire of Faith

This religious and historical documentary film debuted in 2000. It is part of the Empires and Great Religions series created by PBS. The first part of the film is about the history of Islam, with major emphasis on the Prophet Mohammed and his life. The second portion of the film is about early Islamic caliphates in Arabia, how Islam played a role in the Crusades of the Middle Ages, and mentions the effect of the Mongol invasion on the religion of Islam. The third and final portion deals with some of the grand Islamic empires of the past such as the Ottoman Empire and the Safavid dynasty in modern day Iran.
