Jerry and Tom are supposed to wait in the bar with Stanley until they receive a phone call telling them to kill him. Stanley starts to tell jokes to Jerry and Tom in an apparent bid to pass the time but also as a way for them to see him as human. Stanley hopes that his jokes will inspire sympathy from Jerry and Tom and they will decide to release him. Tom finds another way to pass the time and begins telling his protégé Jerry stories about their boss’ heyday as a hitman. Tom claims that Vic, their boss, was responsible for the deaths of President Kennedy and Elvis Presley. Tom also uses the this time as an opportunity to try and teach Jerry how to remain emotionally detached from their targets, something Jerry is not good at. Tom desperately wants to be remembered by his fellow hitmen as one of the best professional contract killers there ever was. Jerry’s desire for a good reputation is not as strong as Tom’s. Eventually, Jerry does begin to pick up the various skills of the trade from Tom including such important things like which chainsaw to use when chopping up a dead body.
