Based on the original novel of French author, Jules Verne, “Journey to the Center of the Earth” debuted in 1988 with a hand crafted cast selection. For the popular 1980’s supermodel, Kathy Ireland, this would be her initial film appearance that would lead to numerous other roles. Although containing a mostly similar plot, director, Rusty LeMorande, decided to add a twist within the film in order to make it unique. Instead of discovering just the center of the Earth, the movie entitled “Journey to the Center of the Earth” captivates viewers by revealing the location of the infamous lost city of Atlantis. Debated over decades, the discovery of the actual location of Atlantis has become a dream for numerous explorers and archeologists alike. In this adaptation, a group of explorers start their unexpected journey to Atlantis in a volcano located in Hawaii. At first, it appears to be an average day involving site seeing within a dormant volcano. All of a sudden, a secret passage way appears that lures everyone to follow its path. Even though the explorer’s are leery to enter the tunnel, they cannot resist the temptation to venture forward. Chaos and confusion ensues when they finally reach their destination, a world of exotic creatures and inexplicable surroundings are witnessed. The movie ends with a newfound appreciation towards self preservation as well as life itself as the cast triumphs over tribulation, and miraculously finds their way home. Although seemingly contemporary, “Journey to the Center of the Earth” in actuality offers a profound experience concerning the questions imposed within everyday life. In other words, Rusty LeMorande directed this film entitled “Journey to the Center of the Earth” debuting in 1988 that includes the introduction of infamous supermodel Kathy Ireland as a way to introduce a blend of science fiction with a touch of human nature. Although controversial at first, this movie stands the test of time with its unique, as well as admirable life lessons.
