Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
- 1 hr 34 min
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island continues the story with Sean as a slightly older teen who lives with his mom and his new stepfather, played by Dwayne Johnson. Sean still has an interest in unexplained items of archeological importance. He stumbles upon some journals of his grandfather which indicate the existence of a hidden island. The relationship between Sean and his step father is a stressed one, which leads Sean to leave home in search of the mysterious island and his long lost grandfather. His stepfather Hank, finds him and in an effort to bring peace to the household, talks Sean's mother into letting the both of them go on a journey to find this mysterious island. The journey brings them to a little village where they need to rent a boat in order to get out onto the ocean where the coordinates indicate the island exists. This is where they meet the boat owner and his teenage daughter who end up becoming part of their team in the journey. Sean develops a crush on the girl which remains throughout the rest of the movie. As the boat ventures out it encounters a storm which brings it to the edge of a giant whirlpool. The whirlpool is actually a portal through which the boat must travel in order to find the hidden island. Once the adventurers land on the island they quickly discover it is a place frozen in time. The vegetation as well as the wildlife is super sized as it would have been in prehistoric times. As the team is trying to escape from one of the island's many beasts they receive help from an unlikely source. It seems Sean's grandfather is alive and well and still on the island. The rest of the story revolves around the group, which now includes Sean's grandfather, trying to make their way to an area where they can access the portal and get back home. As the group begins their journey toward a volcano, they encounter some old ruins of a city, which have begun to acquire water. Sean's grandfather realizes the island is sinking and the amount of time they have left before it is completely submerged is barely enough to make it to their destination. In their attempt to speed things up they take a ride on the backs of some giant bees, which provide not only fast transportation across the island but some pretty interesting graphics as well. The group encounters several obstacles in their effort to get to their destination on time, which also adds to the element of suspense.
