K.C. Carr, played by the Raquel Welch, is a Roller Derby star who finds herself displaced form her current home in Kansas City. After being traded from her former team, Carr is sent to Portland, Oregon, to continue her derby aspirations there. Relocating to Portland proves to be a challenge in many ways for Carr, the most obvious challenge resulting from the fact that Portland is home to her two children whom she had left in the care of her mother. Living in such close proximity with her two children causes strain, as Carr attempts to balance her desire to be a better mother with her ambitions as a Roller Derby competitor. In the film, Carr also struggles to adjust to her new team as tensions rise over who will take over as the team's star. The film has its fair share of action scenes, most of which involve the violent sport of Roller Derby, where participants race around a track in a no-holds-barred sport where fights and injuries are expected
