In the 1983 British comedy Local Hero, Felix Happer, the astronomy obsessed owner of Houston based Knox Oil and Gas, sends his employee Mac to negotiate the rights to purchase the small town of Ferness along the Scotland’s west coast in order to build a refinery. Teaming up with local Knox representative Danny, Mac and Danny venture to the small, eccentric town of Ferness to meet with the town representative Gordon. As Gordon draws out negotiations in order to drive up the price, Mac and Danny become entranced with the town. Mac begins to enjoy the quirky, slow-paced town and its people while Danny becomes infatuated with a mysterious local marine biologist dedicated to stopping the oil refinery. All the while, Happer seems more interested in hearing Mac’s reports about the sky above Ferness than the negotiations to purchase the town. Local Hero received glowing critical reviews on its release and was nominated for six BAFTA awards, winning the award for Best Direction. It stars Peter Riegart as Mac, Peter Capaldi as Danny, and Burt Lancaster as Felix Happer.
