Love and Honor is a romantic drama set in the turbulence of the late 60s during the Vietnam War. It tells the story of two best friends, Mickey Wright (Liam Hemsworth) and Dalton Joiner (Austin Stowell), who enlist in the US Army to serve their country. Before leaving, Dalton becomes besotted with his girlfriend, Jane (Aimee Teegarden), and decides to propose marriage to her. However, when he reaches Vietnam, he realizes how much he misses her and decides to go AWOL (Absent Without Leave) to visit her in Michigan with the help of Mickey. Once back in the United States, the two friends need to keep their identities a secret and make the most of their 7-day leave. Mickey falls for Jane's roommate, Candace ("T" in the movie, played by Teresa Palmer), and starts to question his commitment to the war. Meanwhile, Dalton and Jane's relationship starts to fall apart, as she begins to realize the difficult implications of his choice to desert the army. Through the course of the story, the characters struggle with themes of love, duty, loyalty, and courage. Mickey and Dalton are forced to confront the reasons why they initially signed up for service and the impact the war has had on them. Meanwhile, Jane and Candace are also grappling with their own journeys of self-discovery and the various decisions they must make, amid the backdrop of the social and political upheaval of the 60s. The main actors give compelling performances, particularly Liam Hemsworth and Teresa Palmer, who have great chemistry on screen. They successfully capture the complexities of their characters' relationships and the emotional turmoil that they experience. The supporting cast also deserves credit, particularly Aimee Teegarden, who brings depth to her role as the conflicted Jane, and Chris Lowell, who plays Peter, a Berkeley activist, with conviction and charisma. The soundtrack for the film is worth noting as well, with a selection of beloved hits from the era, such as "White Room" by Cream, "Itchycoo Park" by Small Faces, and "Mellow Yellow" by Donovan. These tracks not only enhance the film's setting and mood, but also provide an enjoyable listening experience in their own right. Overall, although Love and Honor may not be revolutionary in its plot, it is still a well-crafted and touching film that explores the complexity of human relationships under trying circumstances. If you enjoy romantic dramas with a historical backdrop, this is definitely a movie to check out.
