Love In The Time of Cholera is a dramatic film about a love triangle that takes place over a fifty-year span. Fermina Daza is the woman who attracts the unrelenting attention of two men, Florentino Ariza and Doctor Juvenal Urbino. Florentino falls in love with Fermina the minute he first lays eyes on her. The two begin a long-distance love affair which is put to an end by Fermina’s father when he finds out about it. He is so adamant about stopping the romance that he sends Fermina to live with her grandmother. Her father wants Fermina to marry Urbino and she reluctantly agrees. The marriage is a struggle for Fermina and Urbino. While the couple loves each other, it is not with the affection or passion of a really healthy marriage. Florentino is so heartbroken that he decides to remain a virgin. His mother is so worried about him that she finds a woman who is willing to sleep with him and pushes the two together. Florentino changes his mind about being a virgin once he experiences sex. He finds it to be wonderful. He has also developed a heavy opium smoking habit as a way of dealing with his pain. Florentino gradually becomes completely obsessed with sex. He decides to record every sexual encounter he has in a journal. His journal entries end up totaling over six hundred. Florentino is so obsessed with sex that he never manages to make a good career for himself. He ends up spending his days working as a clerk. One day, Dr. Urbino dies in a fall and Florentino decides that he will pursue his long lost love once again. He has a challenge set out for him because the Doctor provides Fermina with a luxurious lifestyle. She is not happy when Florentino calls on her immediately after the funeral but over time she begins to soften.
