Monkey on My Back is a 1957 film noir about a real life war hero and boxing champion named Barney Ross. Cameron Mitchell stars as Ross. The movie tells the story of Ross who became addicted to opiates during the Second World War. Ross has been a championship boxer before the war. He marries a chorus girl named Cathy Holland and joins the Marines. He wins a Silver Star on Guadalcanal for saving another soldier's life. He becomes addicted to morphine after contracting malaria. After the war his drug addiction causes him to fall into serious debt with a drug dealer in Chicago. This is a gritty and realistic movie about post war trauma and drug abuse.
