Mughal-E-Azam is an epic period film released in India in 1960. The film stars Prithviraj Kapoor, Durga Khote, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. In the film, Emperor Akbar, played by Prithviraj Kapoor, and his wife, Jodha Bai, played by Durga Khote, wish for the birth of a male heir to the throne. When Jodha gives birth to a boy, a maid informs the monarch. Akbar, in turn, vows to make any one wish that the maid has come true. Akbar’s son, Prince Salim, played Dilip Kumar, grows to be a fragile boy. Akbar enlists the boy in the army in the hopes that it will train him to become a man. Fourteen years later, Salim is a decorated warrior when he comes back from combat, and develops strong feelings for a dancer named Anarkali, played by Madhubala. Salim secretly intends to ask Anarkali’s hand in marriage, but a stronger dancer named Bahaar, played by Nigar Sultana, desires to enter into the royal family, and works to gain Salim’s attention. When she fails to attract the prince, she reveals Salim and Anarkali’s relationship. Salim proposes to Anarkali, but his father has her detained. Salim builds a militia of his own to battle Akbar, but he is defeated and given a death sentence. His father offers to spare his son only if Anarkali is sentenced to death instead. Anarkali has escaped from prison but reveals herself to Akbar in order to rescue the prince. She is then sentenced to die by entombment. Before she is locked inside the tomb, she is allowed to spend a short time with Salim. While Anarkali is being entombed, Akbar is informed of his promise to the maid, who happens to be Anarkali's mother. Anarkali's mother uses her one wish to ask for her daughter’s life to be spared. Akbar agrees to grant her wish, and the two women are banished from the kingdom to live in secrecy.
