Nailed, also known as Accidental Love, is a romantic comedy about a small-town waitress named Alice, played by Jessica Biel, who gets a nail lodged in her head during an accident in a local diner. This causes her to experience sudden and unpredictable mood swings that put a strain on her relationship with her boyfriend, Scott, portrayed by James Marsden.
Alice can't afford the medical procedure to have the nail removed so she goes to Washington, D.C. to lobby for her health care rights in hopes of getting her surgery covered. Once there she meets a young congressman, Howard Birdwell, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who takes an immediate liking to her cause and begins helping her out. However, his motives may not be as genuine as Alice first believed.
As Alice's story gains media attention, she becomes an overnight celebrity, bringing even more attention to Birdwell's career. However, his attention to Alice is revealed to be more self-serving than altruistic. His efforts are motivated by a desire to garner support for his own political campaign, and he sees Alice's case as just another opportunity to get ahead in the political game.
As Alice gets more involved in politics, she becomes more empowered and self-aware, and ultimately realizes that her true cause is fighting for the rights of blue-collar workers without health insurance, something that she herself has been struggling with. She becomes a champion for the working class, and even as she faces setbacks and opposition, she never waivers in her conviction.
Throughout the film, the audience is treated to a cast of colorful characters, including Birdwell's overbearing mother, played by Catherine Keener, and a zany senator played by Tracy Morgan who along with a few others, become interested in helping Alice's cause once they hear her story.
The film is a comedic take on politics and the health care system, with a touch of romance. The themes of power, money, and personal ambition are explored, as well as the idea that one person can make a difference in the world.
Nailed was directed by David O. Russell, and shot in 2008 but was not released until 2015 due to production issues, including financial difficulties and conflicts between the director and the film's original backers. The movie underwent several name changes and edits from the original version screened at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film was generally panned by critics upon release, and had a limited box-office release. However, it has since developed a cult following among fans who appreciate its quirky humor and themes of political activism. It is an example of a film that struggled to find success in its initial release, but has found new life and appreciation since.
Nailed! is a 2015 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 41 minutes.
