National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is a comedy about all the things that can go wrong during the holidays. The story centers around the Griswold family as they prepare for the Christmas holiday. The story starts with Mr. Griswold taking his family an outing to find the perfect tree. After wandering around in frigid temperatures, they finally find the tree they want only to discover nobody brought along any tools. Thus starts off the hilarious adventures the family encounters in their quest to have a traditional and happy holiday. The family holidays at the Griswold house are even more festive and funny when several out of town relatives show up for the celebration. Mr. Griswold has an unemployed brother-in-law who lives in an RV he parks in their driveway. Mr. Griswold, who's first name is Clark and his brother-in-law, who's name is Eddie, often disagree on how to perform different holiday jobs, such as setting up the lights. Clark's idea of a festive house includes adding thousands of lights to the exterior. His enthusiasm over his magnificent light display soon fades when he can't seem to get them to light up. Other relatives that add their own personalities to the holiday spirit include both Clark's and his wife's parents, and a somewhat inattentive uncle who's careless toss of a cigar butt ends in an outdoor explosion. Amidst the mayhem with a loose squirrel running around in the house, Clark finds out his much anticipated Christmas bonus is not what he had expected it to be. In a fit of anger, he tracks down his boss to rectify the wrongdoing. The characters exchange many quips as one liners to enhance the comedic take on a dysfunctional family preparing for the holidays. Other prominent characters include the Griswold children and their next door neighbors.
