"Funny Farm" is a comedy that starred Chevy Chase as Andy Farmer. He is a big city sportswriter that has made a life decision to move away from the hustle and bustle to move with his wife, Elizabeth (Madolyn Smith), to a quiet rural town in Vermont. Andy's plan is to write an epic novel about a casino robbery. The book publisher has given him a big advance and they use that money to buy a quaint home with a pond and acres of land. Their new town of Redbud seems initially to be straight out of a Rockwell painting. It seems to be a picture of small town America. However, things are not as all as they seem. The problems start when the Farmers arrive at their new home. The moving van that was carrying their belongings is nowhere to be seen. The movers were given bogus directions from a Redbud local and nearly are wiped out in a bridge collapse. When they finally arrive and Andy demands an explanation for their extreme tardiness, they throw all of the furniture into the pond. Other problems soon descend upon the Farmers. Andy is involved in a fishing tournament that ends with a disfiguring injury. They have a mailman that angrily throws their mail in the street and nearly runs Andy over. They find a dead body buried in their backyard and after having in removed they are told that the body will be reburied in their yard if they don't pay for the removal. The town's constable, Sheriff Ledbetter, is just learning to drive and accidentally sends his patrol car into the Farmer's pond. On top of this, Andy is having writer's block. His publisher is pushing him to meet a deadline and the Farmer's start to suffer some marital strife. When Andy discovers that Elizabeth has been writing children's books on the side and actually gets an offer to publish the books, he loses his cool and the Farmers decide to separate. They involve the whole town to attempt to unload their home to a pair of unsuspecting buyers. The final part of the movie shows the Farmer's plan working towards perfection. The only question is; do they actually want to leave Redbud?
