Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher (Chevy Chase) is a hard-hitting Los Angeles news reporter. One day, the news of a mysterious family inheritance shows up on Fletch's doorstep. Without hesitation, Fletch is attracted to an overland visit to his family's roots in Louisiana. The mystery of a potential fortune, and the unraveling of certain familial stories is presented to Fletch like ducks in a carnival shoot. The backdrop of backwoods Louisiana culture provides ample opportunity for Fletch to use his unique brand of humor and dry wit to uncover the real reason why his family thought of him when disbursing the family's fortunes. Fletch brings California comedy to the shadowy parts of the deep south in a raucous clash of comedic cultures. Of course, like all great comedic adventures, Fletch must deal with a nemesis in the form of a boss Hamilton Johnson (Hal Holbrook), and the odds of winning-over a leading girl like Becky Culpepper (Julianne Phillips). Fletch also is made aware of events surrounding his family's property that make his mission more dynamic than he would ever suspect.
