Although the decade of the 80’s saw a trend in horror movies, many movie makers found a new niche that fans flocked to see; the thrillomedy. A thrillomedy is a movie that combines a horror movie and a comedic movie into a wonderful movie watching experience. The viewer gets the excitement of a thriller as well as moments of memorable levity that makes the film truly unique. One such movie that epitomizes this trend would be the 1986 film ‘Night of the Creeps’. The movie begins in a black and white format that centers on a college couple who are on a date and parked in the woods when they are spotlighted by a cop, who it turns out was the girl’s former boyfriend. He advises them that they need to leave the area because a violent murderer has escaped from the mental asylum, he then leaves. Before the couple is able to leave a meteor shoots across the sky and the man decides to check it out as it landed nearby. While he is gone the maniac murders the girl and as the guy is inspecting the meteor we see a slug like creature fly into the man’s mouth. We cut to the present day college campus during pledge week and find a couple of best friends who are considered nerds. The friends try to pledge a fraternity so that one of the guys can garner the attention of a girl he has a crush on and his friend chooses to help him in his endeavor. The stunt is to snatch a body that has been in storage at the college’s research facility and put in on the lawn of a rival sorority. The body, so it happens, is the boy from the beginning of the movie and as it turns out the slug inside of him is an alien life form that seeks human hosts in order to reproduce. Now that the body has been freed from animated suspension the plague is now lose which sets the tone for the remainder of our movie; how to contain and stop the spread of these creatures. With a winning combination of action, horror, suspense and comedic genius, this movie is entertainment.
